Propolis during pregnancy: which extract to choose safely?

Pregnancy and breastfeeding are times when many people naturally look for gentle ways to support their immunity, without automatically turning to medication. Propolis, produced by bees to protect the hive, is well known for its antibacterial and soothing properties. However, not all propolis extracts are equal during this period: some are made using alcohol as a solvent, which makes them unsuitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. At Ballot-Flurin, we offer an alcohol-free white propolis extract, specially designed to suit the whole family, including pregnant and breastfeeding women as well as children from 36 months. This water-based formula, with no added alcohol, lets you benefit from the properties of propolis without the drawbacks of an alcohol-based extract.

Which propolis extract to choose during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Of our two certified organic propolis extracts, only the Alcohol-Free White Propolis Extract is suitable for pregnant and breastfeeding women. This isotonic, water-based extract of French white propolis, made with pure water and salt from Salies-de-Béarn, contains no trace of alcohol and has a concentration of 10.67% raw propolis. It's available in a 15 ml dropper bottle (pocket size) or a 100 ml bottle (family size). Our Black Propolis Extract, which is more concentrated, uses alcohol as an extraction solvent and is therefore not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

What dosage during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

The usual dosage for the Alcohol-Free White Propolis Extract is 5 to 10 drops, up to 4 times a day, taken orally, following the recommended daily dose on the packaging. The best time to start a cure is at the change of season, particularly with the arrival of autumn and winter: September and October are ideal months for a preventive 21-day cure. The cure can be repeated whenever needed, for example when exposed to a particular environment (air conditioning, pollution, a change of living environment).

Precautions and contraindications to be aware of

As with any hive product, propolis is not recommended for anyone with a known allergy to hive products (honey, pollen, royal jelly, bee stings), due to the risk of an allergic reaction. It's advised not to exceed the daily dose indicated on the packaging, to maintain a varied, balanced diet, and to keep the bottle out of reach of children. If using it for the first time during pregnancy or breastfeeding, it's best to start with a small amount to check how well the body tolerates it, particularly for those prone to allergies.

Medical advice remains essential

The information on this page is provided for informational purposes only and does not replace medical advice under any circumstances. Ballot-Flurin is not a healthcare professional, and this preparation is a food supplement, not a medicine: it cannot prevent, treat or cure any condition. Since every pregnancy and every breastfeeding journey has its own specific needs, we always recommend asking your doctor, midwife or pharmacist for advice before starting any propolis cure, particularly if you are undergoing treatment, have a history of allergies, or have a high-risk pregnancy.
